15 Things That F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Got Wrong – Hilarious Filming Mistakes

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. may be the best sitcom in the history of television, but hey, what’s ever perfect? Even as one can watch it over and over again, laugh out loud each time and fall in love with the characters all over again, there are some things that are not quite right. Yes, there are some filming mistakes – mostly continuity issues – though most people tend to overlook them. Here’s a list of hilarious filming mistakes you probably completely missed on F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Monica’s “Changing” Apartment

In the early episodes of the show, Monica’s apartment is marked as number 5 on the door. But the producers soon realised that is illogical for an upper-level-floor apartment in a large block to be so. They then changed it to number 20, and what can you say, barely anyone noticed. To keep things real, Chandler and Joey’s apartment which is was earlier number 4, also changed to number 14.

What Characters – Simply Ageless!

If anyone paid full attention, they would realize that the ages of all characters are subject to change. Based on the plotline, punch-line and what’s going on, their age is determined, messing up the overall consistency. Like in “The One Where They’re Going to the Party”, Joey states all the boys are of the same age – 29 years. In “The One With the Birth”, Monica says she is 26, and Joey 25. If Ross too is 25, how’s he Monica’s older brother? Curiouser and Curiouser.

Self-Cleaning Shirt

Here’s another one where the filming crew clearly forgot that Joey is quite adorable and many eyes are going to be on him in any given scene. So, in “The One With the Late Thanksgiving”, he appears with a huge food stain on his shirt, which in the very same scene, seems to gradually sink in size. Maybe it’s not the crew’s fault, maybe they just wanted to show off a self-cleaning shirt they had on set.

Maniacal Paper Towels

Another one of those more obvious mistakes where you wonder how anyone – the makers or the watchers – may have missed it. In “The One With a Dozen Lasagnas”, Rachel pulls out a huge amount of kitchen roll which gets scattered around Monica’s spotless kitchen. In the same scene, a few cuts later, the paper towels are seen hanging neatly in place in the background. Those are some maniacal paper towels with a will of their own apparently.

Super Manny

Remember “The One With the Male Nanny”? Well how can one forget that for the “manny” was none other than the gorgeous Freddie Prinze Jr.! In that episode, he puts up a puppet show for Emma and what a show it is! The puppets switch hands in the same scene, without any recorded exchange. Super Manny had some skills; now we get why Rachel didn’t want to let him go.

Joey Had Some Magical Clothes

It is a fact, if you follow what all they manage across the series. Not only did he have a self-cleaning shirt, he also had one that changed colour and style, one scene to the next. In “The One With Rachel’s Inadvertent Kiss”, when Joey is in Ross’s building searching from the “Hot Woman”, his shirt changes from a dark-wine coloured office shirt to a black zip-up casual one, in the time that the lady-hunt was on. Magic shirt, indeed!

The Vanishing Finger

Here’s another mystery – the case of the vanishing finger. It’s not as sinister as it sounds. In the early episodes, Joey, Ross and Chandler go to a New York Rangers game. Ross is originally seen cheering with a form finger on one hand. In the same scene later on, the foam finger is no longer in sight. The mystery isn’t about where it went but how an entire team of show-makers forgot about a giant foam finger.

Necklace Funk

Rachel has a penchant for the expensive things in life, and we can see that in the clothes, shoes and jewellery she sports every season. While we may have been observing every item on her body, it seems the makers of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. were not quite as thorough. In fact, in “The One Where Ross Finds Out” Rachel is working at Central Perk and while chatting with her gang, a necklace suddenly appears on her which wasn’t there just a minute back. Rachel got some serious necklace funk!

When They Lit Up the Scene

Emma’s first birthday was quite an occasion! But it seems like the onscreen celebration left the filming crew a little too excited and that’s why this happened; in “The One With the Cake”, one of the stage lights is visible within the frame, hanging from the ceiling. But since this was a party episode, we won’t be too critical of this error – the lights could just have been a special dose of brightness for Emma!

Keeping Them Safe

One of the funniest jobs that anyone on the show has had, Monica’s stint at the themed restaurant had us all in splits. But while she wore the fake breasts and cruised along on skates, the makers of the show probably placed mats on the set for her safety. While that was extremely nice of them, that one of these mats is visible in “The One With the Chick and the Duck”, isn’t. Tsk, tsk – looks like someone forgot to do their editing!

Monica Be a Magician

In another one of the episodes, true to form, Monica returns to her apartment after doing some laundry. When she knocks on the door, her hand is bare. But when Ross opens the door, the view from inside shows Monica with a sock on her hand. So what happened there? Does Monica have magical powers so that she was able to make a sock manifest and glove her hand? We are still trying to find out.

Eerie Doors

Amongst the list of things on set that seem to do a lot of bizarre things like clean themselves, change colour and vanish or manifest randomly, an eerie door needs be added too. In one of our favourite Richard-episodes, Monica is seen wiping Richard’s shirt, and his muscular chest is what everyone is staring at, obviously. But if you look behind you’ll notice that the bedroom door that was closed when Monica started wiping, is closed by the time she finishes. Now who did that? Spooky!

Wristband Wonder

When we all watched “The Last One”, it was one serious tear fest right? Maybe that’s why a lot of us didn’t notice this; when Monica and Chandler hold the babies for the first time, Chandler has no hospital wristband on. A while later in the same scene, he’s wearing one on his left wrist. It’s clearly not the hugest error and we can overlook it – after all, who even notices these things when they’re furiously dabbing their eyes with tissues all through the episode!

Joey’s Beverage Muddle

In “The One With The Mugging”, Joey is not being his gluttonous self when he picks out half a dozen drinks from Monica’s fridge. He needs them for his audition and we all know why. The problem is, mid-way through the scene, the beverages he is holding change –the exchange of orange juice and diet-soda is easily recognizable and the other drinks too, though not clearly visible, seem to have changed. Nice touch!

The Curious Case of Crap Bag’s Scarf

Like many other mysterious happenings on the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. film reel, here’s another one from “The One With Princess Consuela”. Mike and Phoebe are discussing a change of names and our favourite hubby Crap Bag is wearing a scarf. Now this scarf is something special. One moment it is untied. And when the shot cuts back from another angle, voila! It has tied itself up. Miraculous!
